Robert Brion

While his main focus is painting aircraft in both monochrome and colour, acrylic painter Robert Brion paints "just about anything that appeals to me at any given time." He enjoys transferring whimsical pencil doodles onto canvas, laying primary colours and colours straight from the tube on a light green background. These works reflect the influences of Native West Coast and Inuit styles. While he resides in Fort Erie with his wife, Gail, Robert's work is influenced by his extensive travels to other countries.

I grew up in a home in which my father and mother nurtured a love for the arts. My father, an art hobbyist himself, guided my early painting efforts. To this day I have a deep love of painting, currently in watercolours. There is a unique and pleasurable challenge in how the brush carries the pigment and water onto the blank paper, and with hope and some degree of skill becomes art! Being a member of the Parkway Artist's Guild as well as Niagara Plein Air Artists has expanded my love of learning and involvement with art and artists.

Albert Ho

Albert Ho has resided in Niagara-on-the-Lake for seven years. He was born in Malaysia, educated in England, and came to Canada as a young man. He worked as an engineer for many years before retiring and moving to NOTL. Initially, he turned to art as a therapeutic activity for grief recovery after losing his wife and then continued to paint because he discovered that he truly enjoyed it. He has been painting for three years and has taken classes in various places with artists such as Anne Reimer, Susan Wintrop, Patricia Haftar, and Julie Ponesse. His years as an engineer have helped him to develop an “artistic eye” with a bent for accuracy as is apparent in his paintings. He has exhibited his artwork at the Pumphouse, has participated in Parkway Artists’ Guild shows, and was part of a recent exhibit Brush Strokes at the Community Centre. Today, he is happy to delve into all types of subject matter and most mediums.

As my first love since childhood, sketching and drawing, took a back seat to family life after high school, I found my creative expression in cake decorating and teaching all manner of confectionery arts from my home for many years. I did enjoy an occasional watercolour class but had not picked up brushes and paints for over 20 years when, in 2008, I decided I no longer wanted a dedicated schedule. Attending local classes whenever possible, I am mostly self-taught and enjoy working in watercolour, acrylics and wet-on-wet oils with nature scenes from my wanderings becoming my main inspirations.

Art has been in my life since childhood. Growing up with eight siblings in the small community of Merritton in St Catharines, many days were spent sketching. Painting came naturally through various local and international instructors.

The creative process of my abstracts begins with no predetermined subject, which is liberating & allows for unexpected discoveries to emerge during the painting process.

Some people collect photos and make scrap books chronicling growing up. I have chosen to paint pictures of some memories that are buried and have come to the surface. For instance, Lassie, our collie dog, would sometimes chase one of the cows at the farm we used to visit in the summers. One day a cow stood her ground protecting her calf and Lassie had to back down.

The art I create is a soulful and interactive expression of life around me and reflects the subject and feeling of the moment. The process “from soul to hand” is my attempt to express those moments on paper or canvas.
As an artist, my goal is to create a feeling in a painting that reflects an interpretation of moods, emotions and artistic individuality and finally, to rely on the viewer to complete the visual interpretation.

I’ve always had the passion and desire to paint, but never had the time. But now since I’m semi-retired from Real Estate everything has changed. We live in such a beautiful and historic region with so much natural beauty that I want to paint everything. The Niagara region is so blessed with not only the Falls, but an abundance of historic sites, parks and trails, rivers, lakes and beautiful skies and sunsets that not only surround us, but connects us all to life. Having spent time in exotic destinations and photographed and painted there only deepens my desire to learn to paint well. My long term goal is to become proficient enough to give back in a meaningful way through art.
