Events - PAG BON Paint Battle

Our inaugural Parkway Artists' Guild (PAG) BON (Birds On Niagara) Paint Battle is an exciting competition for live artists to paint birds and celebrate the Birds on Niagara Festival. Each event features 20 incredible artists who will go head-to-head in three rounds of live painting with the winners determined by audience vote. Plus, seize the opportunity to own a unique piece of art through our silent auction of all original works!

As a warming station for BON participants, attendees have the opportunity to vote, participate, and even purchase original art and products from local artisans and vendors. Audience members can vote, bid and follow their favourite artists at this event by placing your vote card for each round [one vote per round and per division (adult and teen)]. Voting cards will be provided upon entry to the event. This is a free event for all to attend.

Works created at this event will be silent auctioned with 50% of the proceeds going to the
artists. Your local organizer will let you know the expected timeline and method of payment
at the event.

Registration for Artists

Artists who are willing to participate in the BON paint battle must register via email at
by February 7, 2025 : <programme@parkwayartistsguild.ca>

Please put "PAG BON artist application" in the subject line. We encourage members of sponsors of this event to apply and please indicate your affiliation in the registration.

Please also indicate if you are applying in the adult division [age 20 and over] or the teen
division [age 13-19].

Selection will be based on random selection and will depend on the number of applicants. Twelve adults and 8 teens will be selected to compete. If selected to compete, the competition guidelines and details will be emailed to you. There will be prizes awarded to the winners of each division.

This is a free event for all. Please encourage family and friends to come and support you in
this event.

Vendor Registration DEADLINE EXTENDED - Feb 7/25

Birds on Niagara is an international birding festival that has been happening on Family Day weekend every year for the last several years, with birding and nature-related events scheduled on both sides of the border celebrating the wide variety of winter birds that we see on the Niagara River and both lakes. It is the only International Birding Festival in North America.
Registration for Vendors interested in a table at the PAG BON Paint Battle must register via email with Debbie Wright at thewrightdebbie@gmail.com by February 7, 2025.
Please put "PAG BON vendor application" in the subject line.

There will be 12 tables available at $30 per table.
The doors will be open to the public from 12:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. and vendors will be permitted to set up at 11:00 and clean up between 4:00 – 5:00 p.m.
Selection will be based on a first come first served basis and paid.

PRIZING, AUCTION, AND IMAGE USAGE

How does the Auction work?

Works created at Paint Battle will be made available for silent auction at the event with the Artist receiving
50% of the final collected sales price on their work. The bidding will start at $30.
Works that are unsold at the event remain the property of Parkway Artists Guild to be made available for
uture sales with the same sales agreement of 50% to the artist.

Prizes will be awarded to the winner of each Division: Adult & Teen as follows:
Adult $100
Teen $50 + Family Niagara Falls Nature Club membership + Family PAG 2025 membership

Image Usage
By participating in Paint Battle, you agree to let us use photographs of you and/or your work at the event for social media.
Paintings created at Paint Battle are the property of Parkway Artists Guild and painters will receive 50% of total auction sales.

FOR ARTISTS:

COMPETITION RULES
1. Artists have 20 minutes to create their acrylic painting which portrays a Niagara winter bird/waterfowl.
2. Artists must use the blank canvas provided at the competition as the surface for their artwork
3. The artwork must be placed on the easel as provided at the conclusion of the round
4. Artists are encouraged to bring their own mediums and tools. A limited set of acrylic paint is provided by Parkway Artists Guild – see list below. Artists may bring outside medium — Allowed mediums include acrylic paint, charcoal, pen, pencil, watercolor.
5. The use of reference images are permitted, but not required. Any reference of copyright free images can be printed or prepared on paper. There is no free Wifi at the venue, so cell phone usage is not recommended.
6. Pre-made images (collage), including stencils, are not permitted. Creation of stencils 'at the easel' and during competition time is permitted
7. The local audience votes for the best artwork in each round, and the winner(s) advance to further rounds
What do I need to bring to the event?
Selected Artists need only to bring their brushes, extra paint, aprons, pallets, or any other non-mechanical painting tools they would like to use. Art Battle will provide other supplies necessary to the competition including easels, paint, canvas, water containers, small pallets and cleaning towel.

Adults - 12 x 16
Teens - 11 x 14
How many paintings in total will I have to paint at the event?
Participating artists are guaranteed to create one painting and will create a second painting if voted into the Final Round.

*This is the base list of paint that will be available, additional colors may be brought by the artist

Once I get to the event what can I expect?
You will check in with your local organizer, Kathyrn Carrera, and she will go over with you what round you will be painting in, competition rules and how you can expect the afternoon to unfold

How does the voting work?
In-person voting is available for everyone. Votes are weighted depending on a number of factors including the experience of the voter. For example, guest votes are worth 1 point while artist votes are 2 points. Judge's votes are worth 5 points. Voting cards will be handed out at the entrance.
Can participating Artists vote?
Yes of course!
When will I know if I have won?
Winning Artists from Round 1 and Round 2 as determined by audience vote will be announced shortly before the Final Round. The Event winner will be announced after the Final Round votes have been counted.
