“Florals: Paint Big; Work Small”
Two Signature Floral Artists for Demonstration and Workshop
on Saturday September 9, 2017
at the Butterfly Conservatory Atrium
Open to the public, Free admission, No registration

Paint Big: Large scale Florals in acrylic
Artist: Rebecca Montemurro www.rebeccamontemurro.com
Morning Demonstration from 10 am to 1 pm

Rebecca Montemurro, from the Niagara region, is an accomplished self-taught artist who likes to paint boldly on large canvases. Her floral art is lively with both fine details and broad gestural brushstrokes almost in an expressionist manner. Through her enjoyment of nature, she creates paintings that are uplifting. Her art has been exhibited in several galleries and have been purchased for private collections in Australia, Europe and throughout North America.

For the Demonstration, Rebecca will begin by showing some slides of her paintings, all on large canvases. She will complete an acrylic painting of Florals on a 30” x 30” canvas in the morning. If you ever wanted to paint big, but were afraid to try, let Rebecca show you how. You will learn what size brushes you need, how to apply paint on large areas without fear, how to create fine details and really, how to fill the large canvas with interest, working quickly. Rebecca will also answer questions, as she explains her techniques and her colour combinations in the demonstration.

Work Small: Botanical Illustration with colour pencils
Artist: Karen Logan www.karenloganart.ca
Afternoon Workshop from 2 pm to 5 pm.

Karen Logan, from Hamilton, has expertise in fine detailed paintings and drawings of botanicals in all mediums - pencil, ink, charcoal, pastel, watercolour, encaustic, acrylic and most recently Chinese Brush Painting. She is trained in fine arts from Mohawk College receiving three honours certificates and has a background in drafting and technical illustration. She enjoys working with subjects from nature - botanicals, birds and animals. Karen’s exquisite art has been recognized with a long list of awards and honourable mentions.

For the Workshop, Karen will begin by showing some slides of her floral illustrations and paintings in different mediums. All participants have the option to just watch the demonstration, or follow along using colour pencils with a small sketch pad on their lap. In order to accommodate all those interested in this art form, we have set up chairs only and no tables. Those using water soluble colour pencils should use the wet brush only at home.
Karen will be demonstrating and describing the many steps from the beginning to the finished art. We will learn how to look at a live plant to find a good composition; then how to draw accurately, observing the minute details, choosing colours, determining shade/shadow, background and many other aspects for a realistic botanical illustration. You will look at florals in a totally new way.
